In Our Community
Our connection to our community, the city and people of
Indianapolis, is made through partnerships with various organizations
and agencies, continuing education programs, and our Board of Directors. Our Board of Directors consists of community members, representing
the neighborhood in which the Institute is located, various community
organizations and faith traditions, and the three Plowshares Colleges:
Earlham, Goshen and Manchester. Students will spend time with the Institute by way of the semester or summer programs or the alternative spring or fall break programs. Some will spend a significant time interning
in the community, while others may only be able to volunteer for a
couple of hours. Yet each student understands the value and potential
impact of their work on the community. The time that students spend in
the community is made possible through various partnerships with
community organizations and agencies. These partnerships enrich the continuing education component of the Institute, offering training and immersive workshops. These weekend workshops
create awareness around issues that impact our community, both locally
and globally, and provide participants with an opportunity to educate
themselves about an issue, meet individuals and communities impacted by
the issue, and to understand the role that they – the participants – can
take in bringing about change. The Institute also works with community organizations and agencies to
provide training for their staff and volunteers and is in the process
of developing programming for the community.
